New PhD opportunity within our group funded by BBSRC CASE DTP
Volatile Biomarkers in Headspace and Breath for the Rapid Characterisation of Lung Infection
Deadline: 17th November 2017
The successful candidate would be co-supervised by researchers at the University of Manchester (Dr Stephen Fowler and Prof Roy Goodacre) and Markes International (Dr Lara Kelly), providing extensive multidisciplinary training within both academic and industrial environments. The PhD project would focus on the development of:
1. Novel sampling methods for headspace sampling. For our current work we have developed a bespoke culture-sampling system. Both our group and Markes have complimentary experience and expertise that would enable the student to refine this further to facilitate robust and larger-scale sampling.
2. Alternative analytical methods, with potential increased sensitivity and/or selectivity compared to our current methods, which are based on gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GCMS). The collaboration with Markes will enable the student to access novel and advanced analytical techniques such as GCxGC and Bench-ToF.
Applications are invited from UK/EU nationals only. Applicants must have obtained, or be about to obtain, at least an upper second class honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject.
